Santa, Luke, Elves and a Donkey

Hey y'all,

As December approaches, The mood for many seems to change, stores begin to play Christmas music and isles are full of the newest and greatest toys and gadgets. you can find streets and houses in just about any neighborhood full of beautiful Christmas lights, families making Sugar cookies and drinking eggnog around the fire. But, one of my favorite things to do this time of year with my kiddos is done right there in our classroom.

My girls do bible study daily, its one of the huge perks of homeschooling in my mind. A way to bring God into their lives each and everyday. A time to study, pray, ask questions and dive deeper into his word.

The past few years the girls and I have started a wonderful new Christmas tradition! Begining December 1st we read one chapter of Luke each day through December 24th. Meaning that by Christmas Eve we have read all 24 chapters and have read a total account of Jesus. So, waking up on Christmas morning we are more in tune with who and why we are celebrating.

Its hard for any of us these days to not get caught up in the hussle and bussle of everyday life. Once we throw in Christmas shopping, finding the "perfect" gift, family and buisness functions, holiday parties, winter break, church functions, and the many other things we fill our daily schedules with. Its sometimes difficult to remember the reason behind the season.

We think Santa, reindeer, elves and presents. While Jesus is kind of in the background, not mentioned or even recognized nearly as much as Santa, who seems to fill every mall across the country.

Now, dont get me wrong. My girls are big Santa fans lol. and they open up presents wide eyed and bushy tailed just like any one else. However, I also find it incredibly important to keep Jesus the center of the Christmas season.

Luke brings us back to reality, its reels us in and lets us focus on something greater than ourselves! It draws my children in to the wonder of Christmas, in a way that mainstram America doesnt always do.

So while you are working on Christmas crafts and reading Christmas stories with you little ones this holiday season, dont forget to dust of that bible that might have been on the shelf a little longer than youd like to admit and read the wonderful words of Luke with you children. Its sure to be a holiday favorite!
